With Water & Fire we Inspire!

A Water Service is the main water line that feeds water from the City's pipe to your home.  Typically this pipe was installed in copper when the home was built.  Unfortunately for some, a particular type of piping called Polybutalene was installed between 1978 and 1996.  Much of it was installed in Maryland and Virginia.  Chances are if you are reading this it is because you have a water service leak.  More than likely it is due to the failure of the Poly Pipe, also called "BIG BLUE" sometimes.

If you have Poly pipe and it is not leaking, it will.  Poly pipe has been proven to leak when exposed to chlorinated water.  All municipalities add chlorine to treat the water.  Chlorine causes Poly pipe to become brittle and crack.  In addition we get a lot of expansion and contraction of the ground in this area that places added strain on the pipe.  The result is a leak that you may be as subtle as a constant wet spot in the yard or up to a huge leak with water gushing out of the ground causing severe flooding and erosion.  Very often since the water service enters your house through the wall or the floor the water will bubble up around the pipe causing flooding in your home.

Don't despair, DAY OR NIGHT Plumbing, Bath & Gas Log can help.  The first priority in any flooding situation is to get the water shut off.  Unless your water meter is in the ground you can not shut the water off by turning your meter off.  You may need to contact your County Public Works Office.  They will repsond 24 hours a day.

DAY or NIGHT Plumbing can also repsond to get the water off.  Typically you can not easily shut the water off.  You have to have a special curb key to reach into the pit to shut the water off.  Sometimes if the pit is shallow a pair of channel locks will work.  The Depatment of Public works may also be able to help you tell if you have Poly pipe or not.  Sometimes it can be difficult.  Often contractors used copper at both ends and Poly in the middle.  Another way to tell is to ask your neighbors, chances are someone else in your neighborhood has had to have their pipe replaced as well.  IT IS VERY RARE FOR A COPPER WATER LINE TO LEAK.  Okay suppose you have a slow leak, chances are the leak will continue to get larger.  In addition you may expereince a very high water bill.  If you have a slow leak your Public Works department will typically give you a grace period of about 2 weeks to get the water service repaired and then they will shut it off.  It is their responsibilty to shut it off since if is wasting large amounts of water, probably causing erosion, and typically causing you a large water bill.

If your water does get shut off we can hook you up temporarily to a friendly neighbor so you have hot and cold water.  This gives you a few days to find a contractor to replace your water service.  At DAY or NIGHT we prefer not to patch the lines as they will typically leak again later.  We feel stongly that you should get it done correctly the first time (in copper) and then never have to worry about it again!

We have been perfoming water service replacements for over 13 years.  We typically "Pull" a water service with an innovative device that allows us to pull out the old pipe out while new heavy duty copper follows behind replacing the plastic pipe.  The biggest advantages are that we do not have to dig a trench from your home to the street but just a but a small 4x4 hole at the pit by the street.  We have pulled hundreds of water services. preserving drivways, sidewalks, grass and landscaping along the way.  Once the pipe is pulled through we then have to hook up the ends to the city pipe (at the street) and into your house.  Once this is done an Inspector comes to double check the work and then the hole by the street is backfilled and tamped for compaction and grass seed and straw applied, sod is also available.  The hole where the service enters your home is patched with a heavy duty hydralic cement that prevents ground water from leaking through the patched wall or floor.  We do not use regular cement.  A typical water service take 2-3 days to complete and varies greatly in price depending on the depth, length and complexity of the job.  We offer FREE estimates with a Plumbing Professional who can explain things that may be specific to your job but not addressed above.

Our water services come with a 20 year warranty and we offer a FREE Touch up which allows you to call us for more dirt, grass seed or straw.  This is most commonly required when a water service is repaired in the Winter and the ground freezes, making it difficult for us to smooth the soil.  But we will be happy to do our best to get it looking like we were never there!  In addition if you have a high water bill we will be happy to submit paperwork on your behalf so you can get credited for the water leak.
